ENGINEERED MUSIC

Engineer/producer Alan Parsons and his colleague, lawyer, songwriter and lyricist Eric Woolfson, formed the Alan Parsons Project in 1975. Throughout their career, the Alan Parsons Project recorded concept albums (including adaptations of Poe and Asimov books), with a revolving cast of session musicians. 1982's Eye in the Sky was their greatest success; the title track charted in the Top Ten on the pop charts and the album went platinum. Although they weren't able to repeat that success, the group maintained a devoted cult audience

THANKSGIVING

■The First Thanksgiving was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the pilgrims survive the brutal winter. That feast lasted three days providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Indians and the  menu featured turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie.
■U.S. President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving Day a national holiday in 1863. However in 1941 President Franklin Roosevelt established the current date for observance, the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day.

WEEKEND IN MADRID

Last Saturday I was delighted by listening  to  Sting in Madrid  ending his symphonic tour throughout Spain . Having stopped in Bilbao and  Barcelona too. Sting was accompanied by the London Philarmonic Orchestra to perform symphonic covers of his hits with Police and alone.

I must confess I was robbed of breath with some of the songs,  however  An Englishman in New York  was one of the best hits I have ever heard by him in a long time!!!  That ´s why  I must thank  both the singer and the orchestra  because they gave us  the most memorable moment  in Madrid . Simply beautiful !

GETTING READY FOR HALLOWEEN

October 31st is Halloween. Where does Halloween come from? The Celts lived in Britain, Ireland and parts of France over 2,000 years ago, and October 31st was the end of their year. The Celts believed that ghosts came back to earth on this day. Today many people around the world celebrate this old festival - but today people usually have parties, dress up, and tell spooky stories about witches, skeletons, bats and ghosts.

 Have some Halloween fun!

    COLUMBUS DAY

Columbus Day became an official United States federal holiday in 1970. "Since 1971, the holiday has been commemorated in the U.S. on the second Monday in October, the same day as Thanksgiving in neighboring Canada. Many states and cities with large Native American populations do not recognize Columbus Day or celebrate "Indigenous People's Day" or "Native American Day" instead. Many countries celebrate Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World under the names Día de la Raza (Day of the Race) or Day of the Cultures, Day of the Americas, Discovery Day, Spanish Day (Spain), or Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance - Venezuela).

    WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS

    I've paid my dues
    Time after time
    I've done my sentence
    But committed no crime
    And bad mistakes
    I've made a few
I've had my share of sand kicked in my face
    But I've come through
We are the champions, my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end
    We are the champions
    We are the champions
    No time for losers
Cause we are the champions - of the world( 3)
    I've taken my bows
    And my curtain calls
You brought me fame and fortune and everything that goes with it
    I thank you all
But it's been no bed of roses
    No pleasure cruise -
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race
And I aint gonna lose -

    BILINGÜISMO: OFF WE GO !

    1. Programación del curso
    2. Formación del profesorado
    3.Captación de alumnos/as.

THE SILENT E ( by Tom Lehrer)

Practice your spelling  and pronuntiation with this song that English students used to learn at school:

Who can turn a can into a cane?
Who can turn a pan into a pane?
It's not too hard to see
     It's Silent E
Who can turn a cub into a cube?
Who can turn a tub into a tube?
    It's elementary
    For Silent E
He took a pin and turned it into pine
He took a twin and turned him into twine
Who can turn a cap into a cape?
Who can turn a tap into a tape?
A little glob becomes a globe instantly
If you just add Silent E
He turned a dam - Alikazam! - into a dame
But my friend Sam stayed just the same.
Who can turn a man into a mane?
Who can turn a van into a vane?
A little hug becomes huge instantly
    Don't add W, don't add X, and don't add Y or Z,
    Just add Silent E.

    EUROPE DAY

On the 9th of May 1950, Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations.
This proposal, known as the "Schuman declaration", is considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union.

Today, the 9th of May has become a European symbol (Europe Day) which, along with the flag, the anthem, the motto and the single currency (the euro), identifies the political entity of the European Union.

WHEN DO ROSES AND BOOKS GO TOGETHER?

The answer is on St George’s Day, or Book Day, as people call it. Every year, on 23rd April, people give each other books and roses in honour of St George. The tradition of giving roses began in the 15th century. According to a legend, St George killed a dragon, and the dragon’s blood turned into a rose bush. St George gave a rose from the bush to a princess, and once a year,  men still give roses to women.
So how did books become part of the festival? The 23rd April is the date of the death of the famous authors Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare, so people began giving each other books on this day. The custom became so popular that countries all over the world have started celebrating Book Day as well.

    ALL FOOL´S DAY

    "The first of April
    is the day we remember
what we are the other 364 days of the year."

    ~By Mark Twain~

April 1st is April Fools Day. A day when people play practical jokes on each other.
Here are some of the most memorable ones in England:
    • In 1957 Panorama, a TV programme, fooled millions of Brits into believing that spaghetti grows on trees! The show announced that thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop.
    • In 2002 Tesco published an advertisement announcing the successful development of a genetically modified whistling carrot with tapered air holes in their side. The extraordinary carrots would start to whistle once fully cooked!
    • In 2006 The Daily Mail reported that Tony Blair, in a "literally incredible break with decades of tradition," had decided to paint the door of 10 Downing Street red. ""After 270 years, Blair paints No 10 front door socialist red."
    • Finally , two years ago the  Daily Express claimed that biscuits were being mixed into tarmac to help make roads safer. "Scientists yesterday revealed that broken biscuits are in fact the perfect material to help resurface roads... Years of experimental research revealed that crushed-up ginger nuts are the best biscuits for a road's sub-base, as they are more porous and allow water to drain away.

CELEBRATING WOMEN´S DAY IN OUR SCHOOL

Here you can see different drawings about girls  made by our students from 2º ESO with their teacher  Mª José Barbero to celebrate WOMEN´S DAY.

    --------------------------------------------------------------
HISTORY OF THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN´S DAY
    --------------------------------------------------------------
This event was originated in 1908 when women garment makers in New York demonstrated to demand better working conditions. They worked in appalling conditions, earned half of men's wages, died prematurely from poor health and didn't have the right to vote.

In 1910 an international conference of women resolved that each year a day should be set aside to press for women's demands. Since then International Women's Day (IWD) has been celebrated around the world each year on March 8. From its inception International Women's Day has stood for equality between women and men.

At the same time in England, women were meeting and marching to demand the right to vote. The Suffragettes adopted the colours of Green, White and Violet to stand for their slogan "Give Women the Vote". Since then these colours have been used to symbolise the struggle for women to obtain equal rights.

In Sydney, IWD was first celebrated in 1928 at a rally that called for equal pay for equal work, an eight hour day for shop workers, no piece-work, a base wage for the unemployed and paid annual holidays. Rallies and marches have been held throughout Australia every year since.

Of course, much has improved since then, but we still have some way to go to achieve equal opportunity for women, not only in Australia but throughout the world.

So IWD is about remembering the battles long fought to build a society that is just and fair to all its members a society in which diversity, tolerance, safety, social justice and equality between women and men is a given. And its about celebrating what women have done, are doing and can do.
